What is Pilates?
By now most people know the answer to this question. Pilates is an exercise technique developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 1900’s to increase strength, encourage proper spinal alignment and promote physical healing. It was discovered by the dance community in the 1920’s and today is used in conjunction with physical therapy and rehabilitation.
Is the better question! Because Pilates is for everybody! From the fit athlete looking to gain flexibility and core strength to the inactive person who wants to sit up straighter, walk up stairs with more ease or pick up children/grandchildren with less struggle. Pilates is for anyone who wants to improve the shape of their bodies and gain muscle tone.
The Benefits of Pilates
Recent studies have shown it to be beneficial in supporting good bone health and in managing arthritis pain. It can be therapeutic in treating many back, knee or neck injuries where more traditional exercise cannot be done. Other studies have shown that the precision movements of Pilates can help with Multiple Sclerosis as well as Parkinson’s Disease.
